A new survey conducted at Accountex North has lifted the lid on the stranger side of business finances — exposing some of the most outrageous and creative expense claims ever submitted, including wedding dresses, cosmetic surgery, £42,000 football boxes, and even doggy daycare.

Accountants and bookkeepers are well-versed in spotting unusual spending, but this latest research shows just how inventive some business owners can be when pushing the limits of what qualifies as an “allowable expense.”

Cloud2Me — the fastest-growing UK-based hosted desktop provider for the accountancy sector — asked accountants and bookkeepers to share the strangest, funniest, or most surprising expense claims they’ve ever encountered. The results revealed a mix of luxury indulgences, extravagant trips, and questionable “business costs.”

Some of the most eye-opening claims included:

  • A Rolex watch “to get to meetings”
  • Wedding dresses and engagement rings
  • Trips to Ibiza, Paris, and Las Vegas (with limousines included)
  • A racehorse, categorised as “work equipment”
  • £42,000 for a box at Manchester City
  • Cosmetic surgery, including a boob job
  • £500 of McDonald’s food
  • Doggy daycare and accessories
  • School fees
  • A ski trip combined with a strip club visit
  • An aquarium and a packet of Werther’s Originals

While most of these expense claims were ultimately rejected, the findings showcase the creativity — and sometimes audacity — of individuals trying to blur the line between personal and professional spending.

Helen Brooks, Head of Commercial at Cloud2Me, commented on the findings:

“Accountants really do see it all – from Rolexes and wedding dresses to pet daycare and ski trips. While these examples might make us smile, they’re also a reminder of how important accountants are in guiding businesses through compliance and making sure things are done properly. Behind every bizarre claim is a serious responsibility… keeping companies on the right side of HMRC.”

Expense claims often reveal just how thin the line can be between personal indulgence and legitimate business costs. While most firms are diligent about compliance, accountants admit that it’s not uncommon to see claims that test the limits of what’s acceptable.

These “grey areas” underscore the vital role accountants play in protecting both businesses and clients from unnecessary risk or costly HMRC penalties.

Helen adds:

“We know the accountancy sector can be incredibly serious and high-pressure, especially around tax deadlines. But there’s also room to celebrate the lighter moments. This survey shows the human side of the profession, and we’re proud to be part of that conversation.”

The survey highlights that accountants aren’t just number-crunchers, but trusted advisers and gatekeepers of good governance. In an era of increased financial scrutiny, their role is more important than ever — even when that means explaining why a racehorse doesn’t quite count as “essential office equipment.”
